An Introduction to The Grand Canyon State

Arizona is more than just the Grand Canyon — it’s a state where adventure is waiting around every corner. From red rock hikes in Sedona and waterfalls hidden in the desert, to cozy mountain towns, vibrant cities, and unique cultural experiences, Arizona is full of surprises that keep travelers coming back year after year. My name is Danielle, and I have lived here for 11 years as of 2025, and love it so much. My biggest desire is to share it with others.

From desert hikes to mountain towns, Arizona is full of bucket-list experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

What makes Arizona so special is its variety. In just a few hours you can go from cactus-filled desert to pine forests, or from bustling city streets to small-town escapes. That means no matter what kind of traveler you are — hiker, foodie, road-tripper, or festival-goer — there’s always something new to explore.

This guide is for both first-time visitors and locals who want to rediscover the state in a fresh way. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or mapping out a full road trip, you’ll find the best things to do in Arizona broken down into five key categories:

Outdoor Adventures in Arizona

One of the best ways to experience state 48 is on the trail. The state’s landscapes are incredibly diverse — you can hike through red rock canyons, cool off in desert swimming holes, wander forested mountain trails, or even explore hidden caves. Whether you’re looking for a short, beginner-friendly stroll or an all-day adventure, AZ has something for every type of explorer. Let me go over some of my favorite outdoor adventures to add to your bucket list.

🥾 Must-Try Hikes

Arizona hikes are like no other. From the red rocks in Sedona to the forested trails in Flagstaff to the Saguaro-lined desert around Phoenix, these trails are SO UNIQUE.

💦 Water Adventures

Water adventures in Arizona are the best. We have 360 days of sun and hot summers, so water hikes & swimming holes are the best escape. Adventures like this span from backpacking to Havasupai Falls deep in the Grand Canyon to tubing the Salt River to exploring beautiful seasonal waterfalls in the desert. And yes, we do have water- haha.

🕳 Hidden Caves & Unique Trails

If you love offbeat adventures, Arizona’s caves, canyons, and quirky trails are perfect. These hikes are less crowded and often feel like you’ve stumbled into a secret world. Please always LEAVE NO TRACE. Respect the land for future generations so everyone can continue to enjoy it. Here’s a few of my favorites.

Arizona Destinations

Arizona is more than just incredible landscapes — it’s also filled with vibrant cities, cozy mountain towns, and hidden small-town gems. Whether you’re exploring world-famous spots like Sedona or rediscovering the culture and food of Phoenix, each destination offers something unique.

🌵 Central Arizona Destinations

Everyone has a little bit of different definitions as to the regions of Arizona, but for the purpose of this post I will refer to “Central Arizona” as the general Phoenix area. Phoenix is referred to as “The Valley of the Sun,” as it sits in a valley surrounded by mountains. The city sits at 1,000 feet elevation, and is actually one of the fastest growing cities in America.

🏔 Northern Arizona Destinations

I categorize “Northern Arizona” as anything at least an hour north of Phoenix. This includes places like Payson, The Mogollon Rim, The White Mountains, Sedona, Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon, Page, and more. This region is such an escape from the Phoenix Valley for all seasons. You get fall colors in autumn, snow in the winter (yes, snow!), and cooler temperatures in the hot Phoenix summer.

🌇 Southern Arizona Destinations

Southern Arizona should definitely be on your list, too! It is full of history and diversity, from the Saguaros in Saguaro National Park, to wine country near Sonoita, to the forest on top of the USA’s southernmost ski resort, Mt. Lemmon.

Food, Stays, & Experiences in Arizona

Arizona’s adventure doesn’t stop when the hike ends. The state is filled with incredible food, cozy lodging, and one-of-a-kind experiences that make your trip unforgettable. From sipping coffee in the desert morning to riding a hot air balloon or booking a stay in a quirky cabin, therea are plenty of ways to relax and explore beyond the trails.

🍽 Unique Food & Drink

One of my favorite things about travel (near or far), is having unique experiences that you can’t have anywhere else. Checking out the best restaurants and coffee shops in Arizona is now my favorite passtime. There are so many good bites & drinks both in the Phoenix area and beyond.

🏡 Unique Places to Stay

How can you travel to Arizona without staying somewhere? You might be a local, but even then- Arizona getaways are the best. There are so many unique cabins, campsites, and botique hotels to check out.

♨️ One-of-a-Kind Experiences

Whether you splurge or stay on a tight budget, you won’t regret enjoying unique experiences in Arizona. Things like a “sauna and hike” experience in Flagstaff, or a Desert Sunset Cruise on a lake, or riding a Hot Air Balloon over the desert.

Seasons in Arizona

Believe it or not, we do actually have seasons, haha. You just might have to drive outside of Phoenix a little bit. It’s important to consider the season you plan to visit, as there are so many unique things to do in each season.

☀️ Spring & Summer in Arizona

When someone thinks of Arizona, of course they think of all the sunshine. Here are some of the best sunny adventures and best escapes from the heat when Phoenix feels too hot.

Believe it or not, it does actually snow in Arizona. And it can get really cold. Flagstaff, AZ ranks in the top 10 snowiest cities in the USA. Winter is so special here, since we get so much heat and sunshine.
