Flagstaff, Arizona is one of the best places to escape the desert heat—trading cacti for pine trees, cooler temperatures, and mountain views just a couple hours north of Phoenix. Whether you’re visiting for summer hiking, fall colors, or snowy winter adventures, there are so many incredible things to do in Flagstaff year-round.
From hiking to the top of Humphreys Peak (Arizona’s highest point) to strolling through downtown coffee shops, exploring lava caves, or stargazing at one of the country’s most famous observatories, Flagstaff offers a completely different side of Arizona that many people don’t expect.
In this guide, I’m sharing the best things to do in Flagstaff, Arizona—from outdoor adventures to local favorites—plus tips to help you plan the perfect trip.

Flagstaff is one of the best places in Arizona to escape the desert heat, with cooler temperatures, pine forests, and mountain views just a couple hours north of Phoenix. It’s a year-round destination, whether you’re visiting for summer hiking, fall colors, or winter snow.
From hiking Humphreys Peak to exploring downtown coffee shops, visiting Snowbowl, or stargazing at Lowell Observatory, there are so many things to do in Flagstaff, Arizona for every type of trip. If it’s your first time visiting, staying near downtown is most convenient, or opt for unique stays like High Country Motor Lodge, Americana Motor Hotel, or Village Camp Flagstaff.
Best Time of the Year to Visit Flagstaff
Honestly, anytime in Flagstaff, Arizona is amazing. Fall is a stunner, winter is a white wonderland, summer is adventure central- it’s all good. Spring probably is my least favorite in the area (March-May), but it is all great. There is so much to do in Flagstaff regardless of time of the year. It is SOOO MUCH cooler (in temperature, haha) than Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix gets up to 115 degrees. The temperature in Flagstaff is on average 20-30 degrees cooler- WOW.
Things to Do in Flagstaff, Arizona: Outdoor Adventures
Flagstaff is one of the best places in Arizona for outdoor adventures, with endless hiking trails, alpine scenery, and cooler temperatures that make it perfect for exploring year-round. Whether you’re looking for a challenging summit hike or a more relaxed day in nature, there are plenty of ways to get outside and experience the beauty of northern Arizona.
🥾 Summit Humphreys Peak
We’re starting off with a bang here. This is one of the most iconic things to do in Flagstaff. Mt. Humphrey’s is the tallest point in Arizona, sitting at 12,633 ft tall. The hike itself is over 10 miles and over 3,000 ft in elevation gain. It takes up most of your day. But, if you live in Arizona, you NEED to complete this bucket-list item at least once. The trail itself is beautiful. This hike is best between late May and September, when snow isn’t covering the peak.
Beware if you aren’t used to higher elevation- it is definitely harder. You’ll find yourself needing more breaks- which is OKAY.
🌿 Walk or Picnic at Buffalo Park
Buffalo Park is an awesome, large public park in Flagstaff. My favorite part- Sunflower season. As pictured above, this park becomes a beautiful flower field, usually sometime during August. Whether the flowers are present or not, Buffalo Park has a wonderful wide, well-maintained dirt path that’s great for walking, trail running (cross country stars train here), or biking. Anytime of the year is a great time to visit Buffalo Park.
🌲 Go Hiking in Flagstaff
Beyond Humphreys Peak, Flagstaff has dozens of incredible hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more moderate routes. Some of the most popular hikes include the Aspen Loop for fall colors, the Kachina Trail for a longer scenic hike, and Fatman’s Loop for a shorter but rewarding option.

The Lava Rive Cave is a unique mile-long underground cave about 25 minutes out of Downtown Flagstaff. They estimate that about 700,000 years ago molten rock exploded and created this cave. It’s only 1/4 mile from the parking lot and is family-friendly as well. It’s even better on a hot day, as walking a few steps into the cave drops the temperature 20+ degrees. Make sure to bring a headlamp!
🎿 Visit Snowbowl Resort
Yes, Arizona is known for the heat, but don’t be fooled- Flagstaff is COLD in the winter. But because of that, one of the best things to do in Flagstaff is to ski/snowboard at Snowbowl Resort. It is Arizona’s best ski resort. I have not gotten into those activities YET, but I do love to snowshoe and winter hike. I try to get away every year to Flagstaff in the winter. 💧 See Sycamore Falls: Flagstaff’s Seasonal Waterfall
Sycamore Falls is one of the most beautiful views near Flagstaff, to me. It is a seasonal waterfall, meaning it only flows after recent water flow. Flagstaff, Arizona is home to 3 beautiful National Monuments: Sunset Crater, Walnut Canyon, and Wupatki National Monuments. Sunset Crater is known for its geological history, being a prior volcano. Walnut Canyon and Wupatki are both known for their ruins, up against beautiful landscape.

Beyond hiking and outdoor adventures, Flagstaff has a handful of unique experiences that you won’t find anywhere else in Arizona. From stargazing in one of the country’s first Dark Sky Cities to exploring lava tubes and relaxing at a Nordic spa, these are some of the most memorable things to do in Flagstaff.
🧖 Relax at a Nordic Spa
Yes, that’s right! The first Nordic Spa in Arizona is located in Flagstaff, Arizona, within High Country Motor Lodge. I stayed here in July of 2024 and LOVED IT. A “Nordic Spa” is one that focuses alternating between cold and heat exposure- cold plunge and sauna, typically. There are many potential health benefits of doing this, like decreased inflammation, lower blood pressure, improved skin health, and many more! Highly recommend trying it out and staying!
🔭 Visit Lowell Observatory
Lowell Observatory is one of the most popular attractions in Flagstaff—and for good reason. Known for its role in the discovery of Pluto, this historic observatory offers a chance to learn about astronomy and view the night sky through powerful telescopes.
Flagstaff is designated as an International Dark Sky City, making it one of the best places in the country for stargazing. Visiting Lowell Observatory at night is especially worth it for a more immersive experience.
🚂 Walk Along Route 66 in Flagstaff
You may not have known, but the famous Route 66 passes through Flagstaff, Arizona. You can visit famous murals, retro neon signs, diners, etc. The best spot to stop first is at the Flagstaff Visitor Center- they will direct you to all of the coolest spots! While Flagstaff is known for its outdoor adventures, its downtown area is just as worth exploring. With a mix of historic charm, local shops, coffee spots, and breweries, downtown Flagstaff has a laid-back mountain town feel that’s perfect for slowing down between activities.
Whether you’re grabbing coffee in the morning, browsing local boutiques, or heading out for dinner and drinks, this area is one of the best places to experience the local side of Flagstaff.

The community around Downtown Flagstaff is one of my favorite things about the area. There are always loads of people in the town square. There is live music, outdoor movie nights, families running around, people enjoying themselves. Plenty of times, I’ve been surprised with local festivals and events- which are my favorite. One of my favorite things to do in Flagstaff is walk around the charming downtown area. There are amazing stores downtown, whether you’re looking for Vintage Shops, Outdoorsy Shops in Flagstaff, or typical Souvenir Shops, you’re covered. I’ll list a few of my favorites! Flagstaff has a great coffee scene, with cozy cafés and locally roasted coffee that fit perfectly with the mountain town vibe. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, warm up on a chilly morning, or take a break between exploring.
Some popular spots to check out include Macy’s European Coffeehouse, Late for the Train, and Firecreek Coffee Company. Whether you’re looking for a quick stop or a place to hang out for a bit, grabbing coffee is easily one of the best things to do in downtown Flagstaff.
🎓 Walk Around Northern Arizona University (NAU)
Flagstaff, Arizona is home to Northern Arizona University. I went to Arizona State University, but if I knew about NAU at the time, I may have gone. It’s such a cute, old university in the middle of a mountain town. It’s beautiful to walk through during your visit to Flagstaff.

From the best breweries in Flagstaff, to unique coffee shops in Flagstaff, there is no shortage of great places to eat in Arizona’s mountain town. A couple of my absolute favorites include Lumberyard Brewing Company, Diablo Burger, and Macy’s European Coffee House. Let me tell you, Flagstaff KNOWS BEER. There are so many breweries to visit, and whether or not you drink, they are A VIBE.

If it’s your first time visiting, I recommend staying near downtown Flagstaff for easy access to restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries. For a more outdoorsy or unique experience, there are also some great stays just outside of town.

If you’re ballin’ on a budget, or just enjoy camping, Flagstaff is the place for you. There are so many camping options, from developed campgrounds with amenities, to dispersed camping in the middle of the forest. I will list some of my favorite camping options below!
