Paddleboard or Kayak on Woods Canyon Lake
Woods Canyon Lake is located 30 minutes out of Payson on top of the rim. It’s one of the most popular lakes in the area. Others include Bear Canyon Lake, Knoll Lake, and Willow Springs Lake. These are small, non-motorized lakes that are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Woods Canyon Lake has a cute general store with snacks, fishing and camping supplies, and rentals. Check Out Diamond Point
So there’s this super cool area just below the rim called “Diamond Point” in Tonto Village that is known for spitting up “diamonds.” I actually mean quartz, but it’s amazing- you can dig in a designated area and find these beautiful cut pieces of stone. My husband found me one years ago and I turned it into a necklace (see below).

There is so much to do in Payson, AND there is alot to do near it too. Towns of Pine and Strawberry. Happy Jack and Forest Lakes and even continuing on to the White Mountains. This area is full of beautiful places.

Go for a Swim (Best Swimming Spots Near Payson)
If you’re visiting Payson in the summer, getting in the water is a non-negotiable. The good news? There are several stunning spots within easy reach, ranging from calm creeks to a gorgeous reservoir tucked in the pines.
Water Wheel Falls is one of the most popular swimming holes near Payson, and for good reason. The trail follows Fossil Creek Road along the East Verde River, leading you to a beautiful waterfall with natural pools perfect for cooling off. It gets busy on weekends, so plan to arrive early. This is also one of my favorite hikes in the area — the payoff at the end makes every step worth it.
Tonto Creek is the more laid-back option. It’s a great spot to just pull up, find a shady rock, and sit in the water for a few hours. Families love it here because it’s accessible, relatively calm, and incredibly scenic surrounded by sycamore trees and canyon walls. There are also picnic areas nearby which makes it a perfect full afternoon.
Blue Ridge Reservoir is the hidden gem of the three. Located about an hour from Payson up on the rim, this stunning turquoise-green reservoir feels like something out of a different state entirely. It’s more remote, less crowded, and absolutely worth the drive. You can swim, fish, or just sit on the rocks and stare at the water — honestly all valid options.
