Arizona Small Towns: An Introduction

There’s so much more to Arizona than the big cities. Just a short drive from Phoenix, you’ll find small towns surrounded by pine forests, red rock views, quiet lakes, and some of the best outdoor adventures in the state. I’ve been exploring these spots as part of my Arizona Small Town Series and over the last 10+ years, and this page is where I’m rounding up my favorite finds—from cozy mountain escapes to hidden gems you might not expect in the desert.

Escapes by season

One of the best parts about exploring Arizona is how much the landscape—and the experience—changes throughout the year. Whether you’re chasing cooler temps, fall colors, or sunny desert days, there’s always a small town that fits the season.

SPRING: Spring is one of the best times to explore Arizona before the summer heat fully sets in. Desert landscapes start to bloom, temperatures are still comfortable, and it’s the perfect time for hiking and early-season creek days. Sedona is great for hiking + early swimming holes, while Payson for mild weather and flowing creeks

SUMMER: Summer is all about escaping the heat—and this is when Arizona’s small mountain towns really shine. Head north or gain elevation to find cooler temperatures, pine forests, lakes, and plenty of water activities. Flagstaff is popular for the coolest temperatures, Pine & Strawberry for forest + cabin vibes, Payson for lakes, rivers, and swimming holes, and Prescott for a mix of lakes and outdoor adventures.

FALL: Fall brings cooler temperatures across the state and is one of the most underrated times to explore. You’ll find fewer crowds, crisp mornings, and even pockets of fall color in higher elevation towns. Flagstaff is iconic for fall colors, Prescott for mild weather and lake views, Sedona for hiking without the summer heat, and Pine & Strawberry for cozy forest escapes.

WINTER: Winter offers a completely different side of Arizona, especially in the northern towns where you can experience snow-covered landscapes. It’s the perfect time for cozy getaways, scenic drives, and slower-paced trips. Flagstaff is great for snow and winter activities, Prescott for a festive small-town feel, Sedona for mild winter hiking, and Pine & Strawberry for quiet, cozy cabin stays.

Each town has its own unique vibe, making them perfect for day trips, weekend getaways, or a quick escape into nature.

Strawberry/pine

Tucked along the Mogollon Rim, Pine and Strawberry are two neighboring small towns that feel like a true escape from the desert. Surrounded by pine forests and cooler temperatures, this area is perfect for a laid-back day of exploring—think cozy coffee shops, scenic overlooks, and easy access to hiking trails and nearby creeks. It’s one of the best spots for a quick getaway from Phoenix, especially in the warmer months when you’re looking for fresh air and a slower pace.

PAYSON/ MOGOLLON RIM

Just over an hour from Phoenix, Payson and the Mogollon Rim offer one of the easiest ways to trade desert heat for cooler mountain air. WILLIAMS

Williams is a charming Route 66 town that feels like stepping back in time, with its historic downtown, vintage storefronts, and easygoing atmosphere. Located just outside the Kaibab National Forest, it’s surrounded by pine trees and offers a great mix of outdoor adventure and small town nostalgia. You can explore local shops, grab a bite along Route 66, or use it as a base for nearby spots like Bearizona and the Grand Canyon—making it a fun and unique stop for a weekend getaway.

DESERTY Arizona Small Towns to Visit

Not all small towns in Arizona are tucked into a dense pine forest—some of the most unique are found right in the desert. These towns offer a different kind of landscape, with wide-open views, rugged mountains, and warm, sunny weather for most of the year. While they may be hotter in the summer, they’re perfect for exploring in the cooler months and offer a completely different side of Arizona’s small town charm.

Sedona

Sedona blends small town charm with some of the most recognizable scenery in Arizona. Surrounded by red rock formations and Oak Creek, it offers a mix of hiking, swimming holes, and laid-back local spots like coffee shops and restaurants. Whether you’re exploring the trails, cooling off by the water, or just taking in the views, Sedona is one of the most well-rounded small town destinations in the state.

Grand Canyon/ Tusayan

While the Grand Canyon is the main draw, the surrounding area—including Tusayan—offers a small town feel with easy access to one of the most iconic landscapes in the world. This area is perfect for a slower-paced trip centered around sunrise and sunset views, scenic overlooks, and short hikes along the rim. It’s an ideal destination for a weekend getaway, especially if you’re looking to pair a bucket list experience with a simple, nature-focused escape.
