A Quick Introduction to Tempe
location
Tempe sits right in the heart of the Phoenix metro area, making it one of the most convenient cities to visit in Arizona. Just 10 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport and a quick drive from downtown Phoenix or Scottsdale, Tempe is perfectly placed for easy exploring. It’s a college town at its core—home to Arizona State University, one of the largest universities in the country—but it’s also known for its youthful energy, desert sunshine, and a mix of outdoor adventures and urban fun. Fun fact: Tempe is named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, and it’s the only city in Arizona with a downtown that borders a lake!
what is best time of year to visit tempe?
The best time to visit Tempe really depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for. Spring and fall are local favorites, with warm, sunny days that are perfect for hiking, patio dining, and exploring Tempe Town Lake. Winter is mild too—ideal if you’re escaping colder climates and want to enjoy outdoor events without the summer heat. Speaking of summer, while daytime temps soar, this season brings lively nightlife, tubing trips on the Salt River, and plenty of pool time. Plus, hotel rates often drop in the summer, making it a budget-friendly time to enjoy Tempe if you don’t mind the desert heat.
Top 10 Best Things To Do in Tempe
Let’s get into it. I hope you enjoy a local’s viewpoint of the best things to do in Sedona. keep an eye out for my “local’s tips” at the bottom of each suggestion!
1. Attend an Arizona State University Sporting Event
There’s nothing that captures Tempe’s energy quite like an Arizona State University game day. Whether you’re cheering on the Sun Devils at Mountain America Stadium for football, catching a fast-paced basketball game at Desert Financial Arena, or watching baseball at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, the spirit here is contagious. ASU’s student section, known as the “Inferno,” brings unmatched energy with chants, traditions, and plenty of maroon and gold. Even if you’re not a die-hard sports fan, the lively atmosphere, tailgates, and community pride make attending a Sun Devils game an unforgettable Tempe experience.

2. Hike “A” Mountain
No trip to Tempe is complete without a quick hike up “A” Mountain, officially known as Hayden Butte Preserve. This short but steep trail winds up to the giant gold “A” that overlooks the city and Arizona State University. In just 10–15 minutes you’ll reach the top, where sweeping views of downtown Tempe, Tempe Town Lake, and the Phoenix skyline stretch out in every direction. It’s especially popular at sunrise or sunset when the desert sky puts on a show—and since it’s right in the heart of town, it’s one of the most convenient hikes in the Valley. One of my favorite things is watching planes fly over into the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, too.
3. Explore Tempe Town Lake
Tempe Town Lake is the centerpiece of the city and a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. You can rent a kayak, paddleboard, or even a swan-shaped pedal boat to get out on the water, or simply stroll or bike along the scenic paths that wrap around the lake. With its backdrop of downtown Tempe, the bridges, and “A” Mountain, it’s one of the most photogenic spots in the city and one of the best things to do in Tempe. The lake also hosts festivals, concerts, and fireworks throughout the year, so there’s always something happening along its shores.

Just a few minutes from downtown Tempe, the Desert Botanical Garden in nearby Papago Park is one of the best places to experience Arizona’s unique desert beauty. Spread across 140 acres, the garden showcases towering saguaros, colorful wildflowers, and plants from desert regions around the world. This is one of my favorite places to go in the whole state- it’s seriously so beautiful.
6. Watch Sunset at Papago Park
If you love the outdoors, I also suggest checking out Papago Park. It is actually next to Desert Botanical Garden, and has two sides across the road from each other. One side has the iconic “Hole-in-the-Rock” which is a beautiful place to sit and watch sunset over the city.
7. Check Out the Local Coffee Scene
There are so many cute, cozy coffee shops in and around Tempe. One of my favorite things to do when visiting a new area is to check out the small coffee shops. Whether you’re seeing a big-name touring show or a local performance, the atmosphere here feels special—part history, part culture, and 100% Tempe.

Whether you’re looking for a laid-back evening with craft beer, a lively dance floor, or a spot to enjoy cocktails on a patio, downtown Tempe (especially along Mill Avenue) has plenty of options.
