by | Mar 15, 2024

Looking for a free adventure? Want to get out of the city and into nature? Looking for a place to take cute photos- professional or not? Let me introduce you to Coon Bluff- a local secret. My husband grew up 10 minutes from the Salt River and knows all the good spots from exploring as a teen. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t know about this spot! Let me tell you everything you need to know!

Where Is Coon Bluff?

Coon Bluff is 40 minutes EAST of Downtown Phoeinx. I know that seems like a trek, but if you make an evening out of it, I feel like it’s worth it. My husband and I made the trek when we lved in Tempe numerous times. It’s so relaxing. Gives you perspective for when you go back to the city.

Parking & Fees

There is a large parking lot at Coon Bluff, but be aware- summertime is busy. You do need to have a $7 TONTO PASS to park. You can get this at local gas stations and different parking lots around The Salt River also have ticket stations. My recommendation would be to get an $80 Annual National Park Pass, works for things like this (because The Salt River is within Tonto National Forest), and for national parks.

What Is There To Do At Coon Bluff?

There’s a plethora of activities to take part in here! You can enjoy the serene SUP or kayaking on the water, go camping during specific times of the year, indulge in bird watching, embark on a thrilling hike, ride your own horse, and lastly, witness breathtaking sunsets (which I’ll be focusing on in this discussion). Moreover, this location is a popular spot for professional photography. In this post, I will delve into the topic of hiking.

At Coon Bluff, you can kayak, paddleboard, camp, hike, bird watch, fish, and horseback ride.

Hiking at Coon Bluff

Hiking wise, there are two main options. The first is a formal trail on AllTrails, the second is a social trail, or one known to locals. Please, when you’re going on lesser-trafficked trails, LEAVE NO TRACE.

Option 1

There is a 2.7 mile loop trail called Coon Bluff Trail you can choose to hike. Here is the link. I personally don’t think this trail is anything special, and the trail is hard to follow.

Option 2

This is why I wrote this blog- the view from ABOVE Coon Bluff. This short hike has absolutely stunnng views of Four Peaks Mountain Range and The Salt River. Here’s a 3D rendering of where you need to go.

Coon Bluff Lookout Stats

LENGTH: 0.6-0.8 mi total
ELEVATION: 100 ft
TIME: <1 hr
DOG-FRIENDLY: yes, they need to be on a leash and able to climb
FEES: tonto pass
CONDITIONS: steep, possible snake exposure, cliffs

Once you park in the lot, walk on the dirt path towards the water. You’ll see the Coon Bluff cliff to your left. Walk towards the cliff. Stay to the south side of it and you’ll notice a small pathway. Really, you’re just hugging the cliff on your way up. It only takes maybe 10 minutes to get from the parking lot to the top of Coon Bluff. Turn right to the top of the cliff in whatever way looks easiest.  That’s ot. It’s pretty simple. Following the route of the 3D map above will help you most.

What To Bring To Coon Bluff

You don’t need much. I would suggest a small ackpack or even a fanny pack with supplies you need. Always have hydration, protection, proper shoes, and light (if you’re going for sunset). If you want to take photos, a tripod too! A link to everything I would bring in my fanny pak is HERE.
