Zurich may be Switzerland’s largest city, but it still feels effortlessly charming—with cobblestone streets, colorful historic buildings, and a stunning lake framed by the Alps in the distance. Whether you’re stopping here at the start of a Swiss adventure or planning a full city stay, Zurich offers the perfect mix of culture, scenery, and laid-back European energy. From wandering through the storybook lanes of Old Town to sipping coffee by the river and catching sunset views over Lake Zurich, there’s no shortage of memorable experiences packed into this walkable city. In this guide, I’m sharing the best things to do in Zurich—from iconic sights to a few hidden gems you won’t want to miss.

Where is Zurich, Switzerland?
Zurich is located in northern Switzerland, sitting along the shores of Lake Zurich and the Limmat River, with views of the Swiss Alps in the distance. It’s the country’s largest city and the main international gateway, making it the most convenient place to start a Switzerland itinerary—especially if you’re heading to destinations like Lucerne, Interlaken, or Grindelwald. While Geneva is another major entry point on the western side of the country, Zurich tends to be better positioned for exploring central and eastern Switzerland, with shorter travel times to many of the most popular mountain regions. Switzerland itself is landlocked in the heart of Europe, bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east, which makes it incredibly easy to combine with other European destinations.

I flew with American Airlines from Phoenix, Arizona to Zurich, Switzerland. We flew from Phoenix to Philadelphia (4 hrs) and then direct to Zurich (7+ hrs there, 8 hrs back). We got lucky and barely anyone was on our plane so we had the whole time to lay across a whole row! Our flight cost was only $450 per person (February 2026). We chose to fly to Zurich over Gevena just based on prices!

Zurich’s Old Town (Altstadt) is the heart of the city and one of the best places to start your visit. Set along both sides of the Limmat River, this area is filled with cobblestone streets, colorful historic buildings, and some of Zurich’s most iconic landmarks. It’s incredibly walkable and perfect for slow exploring—whether you’re wandering without a plan, stopping for coffee, or snapping photos around every corner. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours here, especially in the morning or around sunset when the light is soft and the streets feel a little quieter.

Getting Around Downtown Zurich:
Public transporation in Zurich was wonderful. Depending on how long you’re going to be there, you can choose the Half Fare or Swiss Travel Pass with SBB. You will want to download the app! You can type in any starting and ending destination, and it will tell you how to walk to the nearest station, what time the departures are, where you’ll stop, and how to walk to your final destination. It was so nice! Old Town Zurich is only a few minutes walk from the main Zurich HB station.
Walk Across Münsterbrücke Bridge
Münsterbrücke Bridge is one of the most scenic spots in Zurich and an easy stop while exploring Old Town. Connecting the Grossmünster and Fraumünster churches, this pedestrian-friendly bridge offers beautiful views of the Limmat River, historic buildings, and some of the city’s most iconic architecture all in one place. It’s a quick stop, but one you won’t want to rush—especially if you’re looking for one of the best photo spots in Zurich. I will say, the lighting is hard to photograph in the evening- so I’d suggest night, or morning!
Ride the Polybahn to Polyterrasse Viewpoint
One of the easiest (and most fun) ways to get a view over Zurich is by riding the historic Polybahn funicular up to Polyterrasse. This short ride takes you from the city center up to the ETH Zurich campus in just a couple of minutes, where you’re rewarded with one of the best panoramic views in the city. From the top, you can see over Old Town, the Limmat River, and even Lake Zurich on a clear day—it’s especially beautiful around sunset. It was really fun watching all of the college age kids walk around!
Relax at Hürlimannbad & Spa
If you’re looking to slow down and unwind, a visit to Hürlimannbad & Spa is one of the most unique experiences in Zurich. Set inside a beautifully restored former brewery, this spa combines historic architecture with modern wellness, featuring thermal baths, steam rooms, and one of the most incredible rooftop infinity pools in the city. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring—especially with views overlooking Zurich from the warm water. I loved it here! You are not supposed to have your phone while in the spa, so I included a post from their page instead.

Hotel Zurcherhof, Best Western
I really liked our stay here. This is part of the Best Western European collection, and it helped us feel right at home. It was only a 10 or so minute walk from the Zurich HB station. A bit tricky with luggage, but doable. Remember to bring swiss wall plugs too!! I forgot. Our room was beautiful and overlooked the downtown area and the beds were comfy. Breakfast was delicious and included too!
Baur au Lac
