Best Months to Visit Woodstock

Woodstock is one of those rare destinations that’s beautiful year-round, but each season offers a completely different experience. The best months to visit depend on what you’re looking for — whether it’s colorful fall foliage, cozy winter charm, or sunny summer strolls along the river. My trip took place in fall- and it was stunning!

  • 🍂 Fall (September–October): Peak foliage season — the most popular (and photogenic) time to visit. Expect crisp air, golden leaves, and small-town harvest vibes.

  • ❄️ Winter (December–February): Cozy inns, snow-covered streets, and nearby skiing at Saskadena Six. Perfect for holiday getaways.

  • 🌸 Spring (April–May): Fewer crowds, blooming wildflowers, and fresh greenery throughout the valley.

  • ☀️ Summer (June–August): Warm weather, local festivals, and scenic hikes. Great for a laid-back, outdoorsy weekend.

Things To Do in Woodstock

We will start with Boston, as this is one of the closest major airports. Some people choose to fly into Portland, Maine too. I wanted to land in Boston to explore a bit, as I’ve never been. It was honestly a beautiful city that I need to go back to and spend more time there. Here’s a few things to do before your drive up north-

Try Maple Syrup at Sugar Bush Farm

Tucked into the rolling hills just outside Woodstock, Sugarbush Farm is a must-visit for anyone wanting a true taste of Vermont life. This family-run farm is famous for its award-winning cheese and pure Vermont maple syrup — both made right on-site. You can explore the maple walk to learn how syrup is made, sample different grades of syrup and cheese in the tasting room, and browse the small country store filled with local products. The drive to the farm winds through beautiful countryside, especially colorful in the fall, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. They were SO KIND here!!

Take a Photo of the Middle Covered Bridge

No trip to Woodstock is complete without a stroll across the Middle Covered Bridge, one of Vermont’s most photographed landmarks. Built in 1969 using traditional wooden construction methods, it perfectly captures the charm of old New England. The bridge sits right in the heart of town, connecting the village green to Mountain Avenue, and offers postcard-worthy views of the Ottauquechee River. It’s a favorite spot for photos year-round — especially in fall, when the surrounding trees explode with color, and in winter, when snow blankets the rooftops.

📸 Photo Tip: Visit early morning for soft light and fewer crowds

Just a short walk from the center of Woodstock, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park blends history, conservation, and stunning Vermont scenery. It’s the only national park in Vermont and celebrates the story of American forestry and land stewardship. You can tour the beautifully preserved mansion and gardens, hike peaceful wooded trails overlooking the village, or simply wander through the maple groves that inspired generations of environmentalists. I didn’t stop here, but drove by and it was popping with people!

Cutest Shops in Woodstock, Vermont

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite parts of visiting cute little towns is going into the shops. Whether I actually end up getting a little gift or not, they’re just so fun to visit.

F.H. Gillingham & Sons

Just down the street, F.H. Gillingham & Sons feels like stepping back in time. Founded in 1886, this family-run general store is one of Vermont’s oldest continuously operating businesses — and it still has that old-fashioned charm. Inside, you’ll find everything from local maple syrup and small-batch jams to Vermont-made cheeses, flannel goods, and quirky gifts.

Vermont Flannel Co.

A visit to Woodstock isn’t complete without stopping into the Vermont Flannel Company, where cozy meets classic New England charm. The shop is filled with ultra-soft flannel shirts, blankets, and pajamas made right in Vermont using 100% organic cotton. My friend got one of their flannels and wore it on a hike and it was so cute!!
