While Wisconsin boasts its fair share of beloved destinations, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore often flies just under the radar of mainstream tourism, earning it the subtle title of Wisconsin’s best-kept secret. Perhaps it’s the remote location, the need for a ferry or boat to truly explore its gems, or simply the vastness of Lake Superior that keeps this natural wonderland feeling wonderfully secluded. Yet, for those who venture to its shores, the reward is immense: unparalleled beauty, tranquil landscapes, and a sense of untouched wilderness that’s increasingly rare. It’s a place where the rhythm of the lake dictates the pace, and every island holds a unique charm waiting to be discovered.

Bayfield, Wisconsin is the best “gateway to the apostle islands.” You will need to reach Bayfield via car, whether you fly in closeby and drive, or if you live within road trip distance.

If flying is your preference, the closest major airport is Duluth International Airport (DLH) in Minnesota, about an hour and a half drive from Bayfield, where rental cars are readily available. You can also fly into Minneapolis- St Paul Airport which is 3 hrs and 44 minutes away, OR the Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport which is 6 hours (if you’re doing something in that area).

Maybe you live within driving distance of the Apostle Islands. I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, so we drove 6 hrs from Milwaukee to Bayfield. It’s a beautiful drive, so it really didn’t feel to bad (and we drove with a camper attached). If you’re coming from the Minneapolis area, it’s about 4 hrs.

For warm weather activities like kayaking, hiking, and swimming, July and August offer the warmest lake temperatures and sunniest skies. However, this is also peak season, meaning larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

For a balance of pleasant weather and fewer visitors, consider the shoulder seasons of late spring (late May-June) and early fall (September-early October). Spring bursts with new life, while autumn paints the islands in vibrant colors, perfect for scenic hikes and photography. Keep in mind that ferry and tour operations may have reduced schedules during the off-season, so it’s always best to check ahead when planning your Apostle Islands adventure.

2. Hike The Lakeshore Trail

The Lakeshore Trail in the Apostle Islands is nothing short of breathtaking, a ribbon of earth winding along the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Lake Superior. The trail offers glimpses into the intricate sea caves carved by centuries of relentless waves, a reminder of nature’s raw power and artistry. This trail started in the same parking lot as our kayak tour, so we kayaked, got changed, and then went for the hike. It was SO COOL to see the caves from the kayak, and then see them from above on the trail! Epic. NOTE- you don’t have to do the whole hike. It’s beautiful the whole way. If you want to see the iconic cave from the top (my favorite part), that is 1.6 miles into the trail.

4. Go Camping & See the Stars

So, you’re itching to explore the stunning Apostle Islands and the charming town of Bayfield? Smart move! This area is a nature lover’s dream. And what better way to soak it all in than by spending a night (or a few!) under the Wisconsin stars? Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a first-timer, there are fantastic camping options aplenty around Bayfield and within easy reach of the Apostle Islands’ wonders.

• For the RV Crowd & Tent Enthusiasts: Check out the Apostle Islands Area Campground. Just a hop, skip, and a jump (about a mile south of Bayfield), this campground boasts spacious, wooded sites with full hookups, tent sites, and even cozy cabins if you’re feeling a little less “roughing it.” They’ve got amenities like a swim pond, playground, and even mini-golf! It’s a great basecamp for exploring the area. THIS IS WHERE WE STAYED AND WE LOVED IT.
• Lakeside Lounging: Consider Dalrymple Campground, right on the waterfront just north of Bayfield. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis and offers electric hookups in a heavily wooded setting with stunning lake views. Keep in mind they have vault toilets and no showers on-site, but showers are available for a fee at the Bayfield Recreation Facility. They recommend RVs under 30 feet here.
• Small Town Charm: The Little Sand Bay Recreation Area (about 15 minutes north of Bayfield) is run by the Town of Russell and offers a campground with both RV and tent sites, including some drive-through options. They have a beautiful sandy beach, boat ramp, and even a group camping area with a gazebo. Plus, showers and firewood are available for purchase. This spot also provides access for kayakers heading to some of the Apostle Islands.
• Madeline Island Escape: Don’t forget about Madeline Island, the only Apostle Island accessible by car ferry! Here you’ll find Big Bay State Park and Big Bay Town Park, both offering campgrounds with electric sites, flush toilets, and showers. Big Bay State Park has more rustic walk-in tent sites too, and both offer access to the incredible 2.5-mile-long Big Bay Beach. Heads up! Big Bay State Park’s campground and beach parking are closed for construction from September 2, 2025, through approximately May 23, 2026.
• Something a Little Different: For a unique experience, check out Twisting Twig Gardens and Orchard, about 10 miles from Bayfield. They offer a few secluded, rustic rentals on their organic farm – a peaceful retreat after a day of adventuring.

Island Hopping: Camping in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

For a truly immersive experience, consider camping on one of the Apostle Islands themselves! Keep in mind that all island campsites are boat-access only (kayak, private boat, or shuttle/water taxi). Reservations are required and can be made up to 30 days in advance via Recreation.gov.

• Individual Campsites: Perfect for smaller groups (1-7 people), these sites are spread across various islands and typically include a picnic table, fire ring, and bear-resistant food locker. Some even have tent pads.
• Group Campsites: If you’re rolling with a bigger crew (8-21 people), there are designated group campsites on islands like Sand, Oak, Basswood, Stockton, and Rocky. These offer more space and similar basic amenities. There’s a lottery for group site reservations in March, with remaining sites available afterward.
• Primitive Camping Zones: For the ultimate backcountry experience (groups of 1-5 people), some islands offer primitive camping zones. These are undeveloped areas where you can choose your own campsite, but be prepared to be self-sufficient with no amenities like privies or food lockers. Leave No Trace principles are crucial here!

6. Explore the Town of Bayfield

Bayfield isn’t just the gateway to the Apostle Islands; it’s a destination in its own right, brimming with small-town charm and lakeside allure! While you’re in the area, carve out some time to wander through its quaint streets lined with historic brownstone buildings housing unique shops and art galleries. Grab a scoop (or two!) of locally made ice cream, savor fresh whitefish at a waterfront restaurant, or delve into the area’s maritime history at the Bayfield Maritime Museum. Depending on the season, you might visit the nearby vineyards, pick your own berries at a nearby orchard, or simply enjoy the stunning sunsets painting the sky over Lake Superior.
