A Quick Introduction to Park City, Utah
Park City is a destination that seamlessly blends its rich history with world-class recreation. Once a booming silver mining town in the late 19th century, its colorful past is still visible today in the preserved Victorian architecture of Historic Main Street, which is now a hub for boutique shops, art galleries, and acclaimed restaurants. While its mining roots are a point of pride, Park City is globally renowned for a very different kind of treasure: its snow. Home to two major ski resorts, Park City Mountain and Deer Valley, it’s a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts and was a host city for the 2002 Winter Olympics. But Park City is a year-round destination, like for fall!
getting to park city, utah
My primary audience is based out of Phoenix. If you’re from Arizona, it’s a simple 1 hr flight to Salt Lake City. We flew Frontier as it was super affordable, and then drove to Park City. Park City is only a 45 minute drive out of SLC. It was the perfect quick fall destination, in my opinion!
best time to visit for fall
Timing is everything when it comes to experiencing the fall colors in Park City. The spectacle is a brief, vibrant window, typically reaching its peak from late September through early October. The change begins at the highest elevations, with the first hints of color appearing as early as mid-September. As the season progresses, the golden hues of the aspens and the fiery reds of the maples gradually work their way down the mountainsides, creating a stunning patchwork of color. By the second week of October, the peak has usually passed, and the leaves begin to fall, blanketing the ground in a beautiful, crunchy carpet. To catch the mountains at their most brilliant, it’s best to plan your visit for this specific, short-lived period. All of my photos were taken from September 28-October 1. I feel it was at peak or even past peak at a few spots near Empire Pass.

Fall in Park City: Where to See Fall Colors
Fall in Park city is stunning. I was blown away with the variety of colors- the yellows, oranges, and reds. Let’s go over some of the best places to see fall colors in Park City.
Big Cottonwood Canyon
I thought I’d bring up Big Cottonwood Canyon first as this is the way we drove to Park City. There are two main ways to drive to Park City- through the canyon or via the highway. We chose to enjoy the scenic way and drive through Big Cottonwood Canyon. It was absolutely stunning from both inside and outside of the car. Keep in mind, there are some beautiful roadside areas that DON’T allow parking and we saw plenty of people with tickets. The photos below were just taken on the road or right next to it!
Guardsman’s Pass
Guardsman’s Pass is a windy road that connects Park City to Midway, Utah. It also combines at a fork with Big Cottonwood Canyon. On one of our days in Park City, we went back up the mountains and down to Midway, Utah via Guardsman’s Pass. There is a famous horseshoe shape in this highway that I have seen beautiful drone photos of. We enjoyed this beautiful drive with lots of red fall colors, and parked on the side of the road in parking lot (marked in my google maps), crossed the road, and went on a short hike to hammock and enjoy fall colors.
Empire Pass
For a truly breathtaking display of fall colors, a drive up to Empire Pass in Park City is an absolute must. As one of the highest points in the area with paved road access, Empire Pass offers a commanding, panoramic view of the Wasatch Mountains. In the fall, the hillsides become a mosaic of brilliant colors, with dense groves of aspens turning a shimmering gold and the scrub oaks and maples below them burning in fiery reds and oranges. We stopped here to watch sunset and take a few photos. We heard the parking was limited, which it was, but we were able to find a spot!
