Everything You Need to Know About Box Canyon Falls Park

My goal is to create blog posts that I wish I had before visiting. I was looking for answers to questions like “Is Box Canyon Falls Park dog-friendly?,” “What are the hours for Box Canyon Falls Park?,” and more. Let me help you answer these questions quickly, so you can get to adventuring!

“What Is There to Do at Box Canyon Falls?”

The main attraction is, of course, the waterfall. The park offers three main interpretive trails, each with its own unique perspective:

  • Falls Trail: This is an easy, mostly level 500-foot walk into the canyon on a steel walkway. It provides an up-close and personal encounter with the falls, allowing you to feel the mist and hear the thunderous roar of the water.
  • High Bridge Trail: For a more elevated view, this half-mile round-trip hike climbs about 200 feet, leading you across a high bridge with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains of the Amphitheater Cirque. I did this as part of the Perimeter Trail on a separate occasion.
  • Native Plant Loop: A shorter, easier stroll that is the only trail in the park without steps. It offers a chance to see and identify local flora with the help of plant markers. You can also get to the falls this way.

In addition to hiking, the park also has a visitor center with interpretive exhibits on the area’s geology, wildlife, and history. Picnic areas are also available. The nice part about this park is you don’t need too long. An hour or so visit is just fine!

“How Do I Get to Box Canyon Falls?”

Box Canyon Falls Park is conveniently located just outside of Ouray. You can easily walk to the park from town (will add location to Google Maps below), or if you’re driving, take US 550 to County Road 361 (also known as Camp Bird Road). From there, a short drive on Box Canyon Road will lead you directly to the visitor center and parking area. If that is full, there’s an overflow lot with a 0.4 mile walk.

“How Much is Admission?”

There is a minimal admission fee to enter the park. While prices may vary, a recent search indicates that the fee is approximately $7-$8 for adults, with different pricing for seniors and children. You will purchase your tickets at the nature center. They do accept credit cards!

“Is Box Canyon Falls Park Dog-Friendly?”

Unfortunately, it’s not. It’s hard for me, because I travel with my doggies. But I totally understand why- the walkway to the falls is metal and open- it would hurt sweet little doggie paws. BUT, you can hike the perimeter trail with dogs, which includes the high bridge and tunnel.
