Hieroglyphic Trail- A Great Rainy Hike in the Superstition Mountains
If you’re reading this, I’d bet my money that you’re looking to go hiking in the Superstition Mountains. The Hieroglyphic Trail is a great option- it’s short, family-friendly, and beautiful. Even better, if it has rained recently, the Hieroglyphic Trail features a waterfall, on top of the historic petroglyphs. Let me convince you why you need to try this hike!

There are so many incredible hikes in the Superstition Mountains, that doesn’t end at the Hieroglyphic Trail. I made it easy for you and compiled a list of all of my favorites for you to enjoy for years!

Where Is The Hieroglyphic Trail?
The Hieroglyphic Trail is located in the Superstition Mountains, a little less than an hour from Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It is a trek if you are living or staying near downtown, but it is worth it. Make a day out of it! It is located on the south portion of the mountain range near Gold Canyon, Arizona.

Parking For The Hieroglyphic Trail
Apple or Google Maps will take you to the parking lot easily. For this trail especially, I want you to know that the parking lot is NOT giant. When I took this photo, it was a Thursday morning after rain, so barely anyone was there. On warm days and weekends, it is PACKED. Last time I came, we had to circle the parking lot for a half hour to get a spot. Plus, you can’t park on the street sides. Be respectful! Go early in the day, late in the afternoon, or be able to wait to do the Hieroglyphic Trail.

Starting the Hieroglyphic Trail
This trail is overall not too difficult, which I love. To note, there are clean port-o-potties and a dumpster at the beginning. You’ll start the Hieroglyphic Trail after walking through a gate and turning to the left. Once you get to the top of the little hill, you’ll follow the signs to the Hieroglyphic Trail (there’s also the Lost Dutchman Trail).

Hiking The Hieroglyphic Trail
Luckily, this trail is very easy to follow. There are minimal side trails, and it’s easy to see. It is also wide enough for people to pass back and forth. I will note, you have to look at your feet most of the time because it’s pretty rocky- you don’t want to trip! It’s only 1.5 miles to the petroglyphs and the waterfall (if it’s flowing). Overall, the Hieroglyphic Trail is pretty, simple, and easy!
The Destination: Petroglyphs and a Waterfall
After a short hike, you’ll be at your desination. You hike to a canyon, surrounded by beautiful mountain walls, cacti, and HOPEFULLY, rushing water. Petroglyphs are historic- please respect them, do not graffitti. Observe from a distance.
“Is The Waterfall Flowing?”
Here are a few tips for you! The water is most likely to be flowing on the Hieroglyphic Trail after MULTIPLE days of rain, or after monsoons. Commonly, this would be January-March and July-September. Again, please be careful if you go during warm months.
The best way to check if the waterfall is flowing is to use the hiking app, AllTrails. Go on Hieroglyphic Trail, then to photos, then click recent. You’ll be able to see the day and time people posted. This is what has been the most helpful for me!

Final Thoughts About The Hieroglyphic Trail
I love this hike! It’s beautiful even if t’s bone dry at the end. It’s short, easy, and great for all ages. I highly suggest it. Keep an eye on AllTrails, and my Instagram, to know if it is currently flowing! Happy hiking friends!
