Things to Do in Salem (in a Few Hours!)

Only have a few hours in Salem? Don’t worry — this historic coastal town packs plenty of charm into a small, walkable area. Whether you’re visiting as a quick day trip from Boston or stopping by during a fall New England road trip, you can still experience the best of Salem — from witch trial history and haunted landmarks to cozy coffee shops and harbor views. Here’s how to make the most of a short visit to one of Massachusetts’ most famous (and spookiest) towns.
1. Visit the Salem Witch Museum
If you only have time for one historic stop in Salem, make it the Salem Witch Museum. I sadly didn’t make time for this, but wish I did! This popular attraction dives into the events of 1692, when fear and superstition led to one of the most infamous witch trials in American history. They have fun lighting and cool sets that bring the trials to life in an engaging and educational way. It’s a must for first-time visitors wanting to understand Salem’s past in under an hour. I love this video below of another great creator showing the museum!

2. See the Witch Trials Memorial
Just a short walk from the museum, the Witch Trials Memorial offers a quiet, reflective space to honor the 20 innocent lives lost during the 1692 trials. Stone benches engraved with the victims’ names line the memorial, creating a moving reminder of Salem’s haunting history. Next door, the Old Burying Point Cemetery — one of the oldest in the country — adds even more atmosphere, with centuries-old gravestones and autumn leaves scattered across the paths. It was so eerie driving past year. It honestly wasn’t even that long ago.

3. Visit the “Witch House”
No trip to Salem is complete without seeing The Witch House — the only building in town with direct ties to the 1692 Witch Trials. This dark, gabled home once belonged to Judge Jonathan Corwin, one of the magistrates who oversaw the trials. Today, it’s a small but fascinating museum filled with 17th-century artifacts, furniture, and eerie ambiance that transports you straight back to Puritan-era Salem. The creaky floors, dim lighting, and original woodwork make it one of the most atmospheric stops in town — and a must-see if you’re short on time but still want a true piece of witch trial history. I just took photos from outside, but they do tours too!

4. Take a Photo with the Bewitched Statue
Right in the heart of downtown Salem, you’ll find the famous Bewitched statue — a whimsical tribute to the 1960s TV sitcom that helped put Salem on the pop-culture map. The bronze statue depicts actress Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens, the lovable witch who wiggles her nose and casts spells with a smile. It was installed in 2005 to honor the show’s connection to Salem, where several episodes were filmed during its “Salem Saga.” The statue has become one of the most photographed spots in town — especially in October — and is a quick, fun stop for anyone exploring Essex Street.
5. Check Out the Coffee Scene
One of my favorite things to do when visiting new cities is to visit a coffee shop or two. I love seeing different aesthetics and styles of coffee- it’s so much fun! Here’s a few to consider-
Blackcraft Coffee
This is the coolest coffee shop. PLEASE NOTE- it is reservation only during the busy fall season. I was so sad I couldn’t go in. It’s like a little spooky speakeasy. Such cool vibes and the drinks look amazing.
