Who Is the Breckenridge Troll?
the breckenridge troll’s name is Isak Heartstone
Let’s go over the troll’s history! He, Isak Heartstone, was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who is renowned worldwide for his large-scale installations made entirely from recycled materials, particularly his iconic troll sculptures. Dambo’s work often highlights the beauty and potential in discarded items, advocating for recycling and upcycling. Isak Heartstone was originally built for the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts in 2018. Due to his immense popularity and overcrowding, Isak was temporarily dismantled. However, due to public outcry and the desire to keep this unique piece of public art in Breckenridge, he was later rebuilt in a new, more accessible location, becoming a permanent fixture and a symbol of the town’s commitment to art and environmental awareness.

How to Find the Breckenridge Troll
Parking
Finding Isak Heartstone is surprisingly straightforward, with options for every visitor. The key landmark to aim for is the Stephen C. West Ice Arena (189 Boreas Pass Rd, Breckenridge, CO 80424). The Trollstigen Trailhead is located in the southeast corner of the Ice Arena’s parking lot, often marked with troll footprints on the pavement. While there are some free parking spots available in this lot (look for signs indicating “Troll” parking, not arena customer parking), they fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons.
Public Transportation
You can also use Breckenridge’s Free Ride bus system. Several routes, including the Gray Route and the Main Street Trolley, offer stops near the Ice Rink, making it an easy and eco-friendly way to reach the trailhead directly from downtown or other parking areas. If you’re staying centrally, a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from the Breckenridge Welcome Center also leads you directly to the trailhead.
The Trail to the Troll
Trailhead Location
So where is the Breckenridge Troll on the trail? I thought it was going to be a lot harder to find the trailhead, but I was happy to find out it was pretty easy! It is located in the far back corner of the parking lot near the Port-o-Pottys. There are multiple trails that start from this trailhead, but there are clearly marked “troll” signs that will lead you to Isak Heartstone.
Trail Length
You’ll be happy to find out it’s only about 0.25 miles to the troll. It feels so short! I was expecting it to be much longer. This is a great dog-friendly and kid-friendly trail. It’s flat and maintained, EXCEPT DURING WINTER. As I mentioned, there’s more trail in the area than just to the troll.
