A definite highlight for any Payson visit is Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, home to what’s considered the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. Isn’t that cool? I can’t believe it took me 10 years of living in Arizona to go here!
2. Fuel Up at a Local Coffee Shop
One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to visit local coffee shops. Payson, Arizona has some cute ones. Whether you’re an early bird catching the sunrise or a digital nomad seeking a cozy workspace, Payson’s coffee shops offer the perfect blend of small-town charm and quality brews. From locally roasted beans to delicious pastries, these spots provide a welcoming atmosphere to relax, connect with friends, or simply fuel up before your next High Country adventure. I suggest Common Grounds, Noley’s, and The Shroom Room.

This is one of the most epic hidden gems near payson. Below the Rim Meadery is an adorable family-owned meadery (honey wine) with snacks and games, open primarily on weekends in the summer. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but 100% worth it. Check out their website HERE for more info.
6. Check Out the Oldest Continuous Rodeo
Payson, Arizona has all the cowboy western vibes, and it is home to the oldest continuous rodeo. Rodeos are such a blast. Absolutely love them. If you have the chance, I highly suggest going to the rodeo in Payson, AZ.

One of the best things to do in Payson is to eat local food! Among the top-rated establishments, you’ll find Rim Country BBQ and Wood-Fired Pizza stands out with its award-winning pitmasters. If you’re in the mood for Mexican, El Rancho and Alfonso’s Mexican Food are local favorites, offering authentic dishes and generous portions, while La Sierra Mexican Restaurant also gets high marks. Those seeking a classic diner experience often frequent the Beeline Cafe for hearty breakfasts and American comfort food. If you like a treat, highly suggest Danzeisen Dairy in Payosn.
8. Paddleboard or Kayak on Woods Canyon Lake
Woods Canyon Lake is located 30 minutes out of Payson on top of the rim. It’s one of the most popular lakes in the area. Others include Bear Canyon Lake, Knoll Lake, and Willow Springs Lake. These are small, non-motorized lakes that are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Woods Canyon Lake has a cute general store with snacks, fishing and camping supplies, and rentals. I usually bring my own. Highly recommend adding this to you list of things to do in Payson.

9. Check Out Diamond Point
So there’s this super cool area just below the rim called “Diamond Point” in Tonto Village that is known for spitting up “diamonds.” I actually mean quartz, but it’s amazing- you can dig in a designated area and find these beautiful cut pieces of stone. My husband found me one years ago and I turned it into a necklace (see below).
10. Visit Towns Nearby Payson
There is so much to do in Payson, AND there is alot to do near it too. Towns of Pine and Strawberry. Happy Jack and Forest Lakes and even continuing on to the White Mountains. This area is full of beautiful places.
